Chapter Twenty-Two

Daphne

I head towards Griffin’s rooms to rouse him, surprise rising within me. We’re going to the Travelling Fair to rescue Aniese Blackwell, and whomever else may be lost from our realm. The way Will had grabbed my hand, storming out of his room, in a flurry to do the right thing, set my heart racing. Who was this man, and what’s he done with my dour, proper William Damocles?

Of course, I know Will has a good heart, but sometimes it can be hard to find under what I like to think of as an endearing layer of arrogance. Though, it wasn’t very endearing when he’d shoved Sellum in the hall earlier. It seems he’s turning over a leaf. I pause in the hall as though I’d walked into a wall as a feeling grips me. Without meaning to, without consciously deciding to, I turn and hurry back to Will. I can’t say why, just that I want to.

He’s learning to grow. He’s finally listening to his heart. He had looked an absolute wreck since the blast, and has made no effort, other than a change of shirt, to remedy that. Could it be that those walls of perfection he’s built up are finally being chipped away at?

I round the corner. Sellum’s brows hitch, surprised to see me back so soon. ‘Just need to borrow Will,’ I say, without giving my words a second thought. I take Will’s hand and lead him away before either of them has a chance to say a word. It’s only when, at a split-second’s decision, that I choose the late-night empty throne room, pushing open the doors and closing them behind us, that Will manages a surprised exclamation.

‘What’s going on? Are you—’

‘How well can you see me?’ I interrupt. My heart races, an undead bird trapped in cage. The fire inside me wells, simmering frantically. I can’t explain what I’m doing, or what’s pushing me to, only that I want to be closer to Will.

‘I—’ Will’s dark brows draw together.

I’m tempted to reach up and brush the scraggly hair out of his eyes. Can he even see that? There’s a gash on his arm I don’t think was there before. It couldn’t have been, Lorelai healed him. I’ve never seen Will so bloody, scorched and yet… so open.

‘I can see your essence.’ Will’s voice is soft in the small space between us. Slowly, hesitantly, he reaches out, thumb brushing my cheek. ‘I can see your figure, though not quite your expressions. I can feel your—your emotions.’ His words stick in his throat.

I’ve never wanted to know something more than what Will can feel from me now. I lean into his touch, wondering if he’s feeling what I’m feeling. I would call it inexplicably, but it isn’t. Not at all. From the moment I saw his wounds after the blast, I didn’t want to leave him, and he has not left my mind since. I ache for the pain he’s in. My breath tumbles rapidly from my lips.
